A fashion doll created by the American toy firm Mattel, Inc. and introduced in March 1959, Barbie is a popular doll among young girls. Inventor Ruth Handler, an American entrepreneur, is credited with inventing the doll after being inspired by a German doll known as Bild Lilli.

Known professionally as Barbie, she is the face of a line of dolls and accessories manufactured by Mattel that includes other members of her family as well as collectable dolls. In the more than sixty years that Barbie has been in the toy fashion doll market, she has been the subject of several disputes and lawsuits, many of which have been parodies of the doll and her lifestyle. Barbie has also been the focus of various controversies and lawsuits. Barbie dolls have been sold in excess of a billion units, making them the company’s most popular and lucrative product line in the world.

A long-running series of animated films, which started in 2001, has evolved from the Barbie doll brand to become a media phenomenon. They were shown on Nickelodeon’s cable channel on a regular basis from 2002 and 2017.

Barbie and her lover Ken have been dubbed the world’s most popular dolls, and their popularity has only grown in the years since.

Through its role as a vehicle for the selling of associated items, the doll has altered the toy market in wealthy communities across the globe (accessories, clothes, friends of Barbie, etc.). Don Richard Cox, in a 1977 article for the Journal of Popular Culture, observed that Barbie has a significant impact on social values because she conveys characteristics of female independence, as well as an idealised upscale life-style that can be shared with affluent friends, through her numerous accessories.
